CHILE, Santiago, gold bust 8 escudos, Charles III ("rat nose" bust), 1768 A, upright assayer, very rare, NGC AU details / harshly cleaned, finest and only example in NGC census, ex-Norweb (stated on label). Cal-2139; KM-25; Fr-11. 26.80 grams. Bright yellow gold with strong remaining detail throughout, particularly on the reverse, where the crowned arms, Golden Fleece collar, outward-facing mintmark and assayer A (as opposed to the earlier inverted-A variety) are all full and sharp, the rims incomplete due to inexact centering, and the obverse (only) a bit striated from cleaning (as noted by NGC), but with important and desirable pedigree. Curiously, this assayer variety appears to be even rarer than the inverted-A and A-over-inverted-A varieties, as the correction took place late in the year, confirmed by a lack of recent auction appearances and the fact that this is the only example certified by either NGC or PCGS. Pedigreed to the Norweb Collection (Spink America auction of March 1997, lot 107).
