CHILE, Santiago, gold bust 4 escudos, Ferdinand VII (bust of Charles IV), 1817 FJ, extremely rare, NGC AU 50, finest known in NGC census, ex-Norweb (stated on label). Cal-1739; KM-77; Fr-31. 13.66 grams. Rich gold color with delicate reddish toning over underlying luster, full rims and bold peripheral details and date, some characteristic central softness but considerably stronger overall detail than usually seen for this rare issue, with a reported five or six examples known, only two of which are graded. Finest graded at either NGC or PCGS, the next finest at NGC being VF 30, further enhanced by its distinguished Norweb pedigree. Just 68 pieces are reported for 1817, although production continued in subsequent years under the Republic, apparently retaining the 1817 date and colonial design. Pedigreed to the Norweb Collection (Spink America auction of March 1997, lot 169).
