CHILE, Santiago, gold bust 2 escudos, Ferdinand VI (bust of Philip V), 1758 J, extremely rare, NGC AU 53, finest known in NGC census, ex-Segarra, KM Plate. Cal-687; KM-11; Fr-6a. A famous and important Chilean rarity, struck in just one date and only with the bust of the previous king, this example quite lovely with deep red toning over luster, light high-point wear and slightly off-center strike, but undeniably the finest known, in fact one of only three in existence among a reported mintage of 443 pieces. The other two are as follows:
1. The Norweb specimen (auctioned by Spink America in 1997), a holed coin believed to be the only other example in the NGC census (XF details), with published pedigrees dating back to Rafael González's 1908 work Colección Completa de Monedas de Chile
2. The José Toribio Medina specimen, plated in his 1919 works Manual Ilustrado de Numismática Chilena: La Colonia, and Las Monedas Coloniales Hispanoamericanas, now permanently held in the collection of the Banco de Chile
The present coin, plated in the KM references, is the Fernando Segarra specimen, originating from the Superior auction of December 1990, where it was pictured on the catalog cover, subsequently appearing in auctions by Ponterio, Cayón, and Sedwick. In practical terms, this is the only desirably collectible example of the three known, since the Norweb specimen is heavily impaired and the Medina specimen is institutionally held and unavailable to the market. Only one person can own it.... Pedigreed to the Segarra Collection (stated on label) and the Superior auction of December 1990 (lot 38), also Sedwick Auction 9 (lot 90), and Plate Coin in the KM Standard Catalog references.
