CHILE, Santiago, gold bust 1 escudo, Ferdinand VII (bust of Charles IV), 1817 JF, mintmark and assayers transposed, NGC AU details / obv scratched, ex-Norweb (stated on label). Cal-1572; KM-76; Fr-32. Well-detailed strike (especially the off-center reverse) in warm gold color, the obverse with minor die crack and lamination flaws but also an old scratch across the penultimate digit of the date, from a reported mintage of just 22,000 coins. Note: NGC calls this simply assayer JF, but it was actually an engraving error in which the assayer and mintmark were punched into the die in reverse order, rendering assayer FJ as JF. Pedigreed to the Norweb Collection (Spink America auction of March 1997, lot 167).
