CHILE, Santiago, gold bust 1 escudo, Charles IV, 1801 AJ, extremely rare, NGC VF 30, finest and only example in NGC census, ex-Norweb (stated on label). Cal-1240; KM-61; Fr-27. Full details including broad rims, the portrait bold for the grade, all in an aged yellow color, the sole numerically graded example in the NGC census with none graded by PCGS, from a reported mintage of just 1,088 pieces, of which we can find no auction appearances in the past few decades, perhaps all the way back to 1997 when this coin was sold in Norweb. It is interesting to note that the 8 escudos and 2 escudos of this period continued to use the Charles III bust while the 4 escudos and 1 escudos (like this one) were given the proper portrait of Charles IV. Pedigreed to the Norweb Collection (Spink America auction of March 1997, lot 128).
