CHILE, Santiago, gold bust 1 escudo, Charles III (bust of Ferdinand VI), 1762 J, extremely rare, NGC XF details / rev damage (Colección Val y Mexía Label). Cal-1475; KM-19; Fr-10. Crude rims and edge, with some interior peck-marks but all details clear and only lightly worn, interesting type with king's name as CRL•III, from a very low mintage of only 540 coins, of which just three are still known to exist today, the others being an NGC XF 40 sold in the Heritage auction of January 2010 (lot 20871) and an UNC "in a private collection in Chile," according to Jara and Luedeking in their 2005 book Las Primeras Acuñaciones de la Casa de Moneda de Santiago de Chile 1749-1772. Pedigreed to the Val y Mexía Collection.
