CHILE, Coquimbo, "volcano" peso, 1828 TH, fine type, very rare, NGC AU 50, ex-Vargas. KM-88. Within the already highly sought Chilean "volcano peso" series, the legendary Coquimbo peso is surely the biggest trophy, a one-year striking from a mint that never struck coins before or after this date (but located much closer than Santiago to the where the silver originated), whose limited products have found their way into only the most important Latin American collections over the centuries, including such luminous names as Salbach, Ulex, Peltzer, Newcomer, Guttag, Boyd, Pittman, Millenia, Von Schuckmann, and Lissner, not to mention also the British Museum and the Banco de Chile. Its design is fundamentally the same as the Santiago pesos, with a few minor differences, especially in the slightly earlier hand-engraved "crude type" that was rejected by Santiago mint officials. By the time a proper mintage took place in 1829, still using the date 1828, striking of the Coquimbo peso soon ceased due to the Chilean Civil War of 1829-30. Small wonder these iconic coins are so rare today, numbering no more than fifteen examples.

The present piece from the Vargas Collection in Valparaiso, Chile, is a straight-grade trophy with bold full details, lots of flash, and very little wear, just some small marks and a modicum of straight and circular hairlines commensurate with a total lack of toning that will surely come with time, no doubt beautifully as is the norm for this series.
