CANADA, unspecified area, copper 1/2 penny token, no date (1840), No Labour No Bread / Speed the Plough, small ground variety, horn at middle of S, ex-Oppenheim, ex-Baker. Breton-1010; UC-4A3. 5.82 grams. Scarce mule combining the obverse of McLachlan-29 (thin ground behind man) with the reverse of McLachlan 28 (coulter far from second ox), this example rather choice in AU grade with iridescent rainbow toning around details on almost reflective fields. This issue was imported to Upper Canada by the Perrin family. Note: Breton considered the ploughing scene to be the reverse, but Faulkner and others now consider the NO LABOUR NO BREAD side to be the reverse. Pedigreed to the Warren Baker Collection of Canadian coins and tokens, and to the Michael Oppenheim Collection (9/2019).
