CANADA, Franco-American (Seven Years War), jeton, Louis XV, 1754, beavers, no signature, ex-Adams, ex-Baker. Breton-514; Frossard-33; Wilson-obv D. 6.05 grams. Lustrous AXF with some weak strike in centers but nicely toned, die-clashing at bottom rim on obverse, lacking a script JCR for engraver below bust of Louis XV on that side but with clear C.N.R for Charles Norbert Roettiers below maize stalks on reverse showing beavers at a dam, legend NON INFERIA METALLIS ("not inferior to precious metals") at top, a popular early issue synonymous with the French fur trade that dominated the country when these jetons were issued during the Seven Years' War, which ended with British conquest in 1760. Pedigreed to the Warren Baker Collection of Canadian coins and tokens, and to the John Adams Collection.
