Bronze mortar and pestle, ex-Atocha (1622), ex-Christie's. 2680 grams total. Mortar: 5" in diameter across the top, 3½" tall; pestle: 7" long. Heavy Spanish colonial mortar with four geometric-style buttresses, an everted rim, dark coloring with bits of green patina all over, a horizontal crack highlighted in patina but otherwise not discernible. The pestle consists of large rounded handles at either end and a rounded horizontal protrusion in center. Recovered from the Atocha (1622) in 1979, pedigreed to the original Christie's (New York) Atocha auction of June 1988, lot 14, accompanied by photocopies of the Prices Realized and the lot listing on p. 54 of the Christie's auction.
