Bronze breech block, probably Spanish, 1700s. 29-1/4 lb, 9-1/2" long and 4" in diameter. In the days before canister shells, certain cannons were loaded by means of this tool (which looks like a small cannon), into which shot and powder were pre-packed and kept on hand, to be quickly inserted into the breech of the cannon and fired directly. This example has a simple 5" x 3" handle and tiny touch-hole near the flat bottom, which has a protrusion on side for locking, the whole surface lightly corroded and dark but slightly brassy in color.
