British dragoon land service flintlock pistol by Vernon, 1759. 2.14 lb. 19" long, 12" barrel. This flintlock pistol is of a type used by British forces during the French and Indian War as well as the American Revolutionary War. The lock bears a large engraved crown over GR, representing George II, along with a small crown over broad arrow, the British Board of Ordnance mark for government arms. The tail is engraved VERNON over 1759. The barrel is stamped at the breech with a small crown over GR and an arrow, as well as a small crown over crossed scepters, both recognized as Board of Ordnance proof marks associated with the Royal Armory at the Tower of London. A crown over intertwined GR is stamped into the stock wrist near the rear of the lock, serving as a Board of Ordnance storekeeper’s mark. The pistol retains its original brass-tipped wooden ramrod. Very nice condition with normal wear, functional lock and trigger, the walnut wood bearing some small marks including two chips on the lock along with two thin cracks toward the front neatly reinforced with glue, the barrel possessing mild surface spots yet otherwise quite nice for the age. Purchased from N. Flayderman & Co. of New Milford, CT in 1970.
