Brazil (Rio mint), gold 4000 reis, Joao V, 1714, medal axis, ex-Royal Anne (1721). Gomes-34.08a; Russo-166a; KM-102. 10.69 grams. Bold UNC with traces of encrustation around details, muted luster, quite impressive for a shipwreck coin and very rare as from this particular wreck (also about double catalog value for this variety in Russo). The Royal Anne, sunk in 1721 "in a strong gale" off Lizard Point while outbound to Barbados, was found in 1991 and subsequently salvaged by Rob Sherratt and Mike Hall (the signers of the accompanying certificate). According to the archeology report provided with this lot, "a number of gold coins" was found in 1997. This particular specimen was purchased by the consignor from known British shipwreck dealer Martin Pritchard in 2007. With original certificate from the salvagers, plus a photocopy of a June 2005 archeology report about the wrecksite.Recovered from: Royal Anne, sunk in 1721 off Cornwall, England
