BYZANTINE EMPIRE, Constantinople, AV solidus, Justinian II, first reign, 685-695 AD, NGC MS / clipped, strike 4/5, surface 4/5. 4.29 grams. IhS CRISTDS REX REGNANTIuM Draped bust of Christ facing, with long hair and full beard, raising right hand in benediction and holding book of Gospels in his left; behind head, cross / D IuSTINIANuS SERu ChRISTI Z / CONOP Justinian II, crowned, bearded and wearing loros, standing facing, holding cross potent on base and two steps in his right hand and akakia in his left. The portrait of Christ on the obverse of this solidus is the first numismatic representation of Jesus, and immediately followed the ruling of the Trullan Synod of 692 AD that Christ could be depicted in human form, hence a significantly important issue. Some slight shaving around edges, but beautifully centered and as struck.
