BRAZIL, 600 reis, Afonso VI, crowned 600 reis countermark (1663) on a Potosí, Bolivia, cob 8 reales, Philip II, assayer B (early 5th period) with unrecorded 400-reis countermark as well (both countermarks on cross side), unique. Gomes-47; LMB-12; KM-unl. 25.88 grams. A very choice and fascinating coin with minimal corrosion and nearly full host-coin details, both countermarks very deeply impressed, the 600 missing its upper half (crown) but the 400 countermark complete and crown-less, clearly not of the official design nor even a known countermark denomination for Brazil, where no doubt these countermarks were made and applied surreptitiously to a genuine but earlier coin than was authorized. With photo-certificate ASS/TH/7248 from the salvor. Recovered from: Association, sunk in 1707 off the Isles of Scilly, south west of England
