BOLIVIA, Potosí, cob 8 reales contemporary counterfeit, Philip III, assayer R (curved leg), ex-Atocha Research Collection (coin 218, "probably period counterfeit"). S-P15; KM-10; Cal-912. 18.57 grams. A very rare and highly desirable example of a certified counterfeit contemporaneous with the genuine coins, almost undetectable as such (and XRF tested as having proper composition) except for the fact that the weight is about 30% low without any evidence of corrosion, while closer inspection does reveal slight evidence of casting, in addition to an atypical flatness to the flan, the details all exact consisting of a full shield and cross, bold full P-R and denomination o-VIII, toned in crevices. Pedigreed to the Bill Barman Collection of Atocha RC Coins, with original Fisher tag and photo-certificate 85A-237129. Photocopy of original Atocha Research Collection catalog to be provided to winning bidder upon request. Recovered from: Atocha, sunk in 1622 west of Key West, Florida
