BOLIVIA, Potosí, cob 8 reales contemporary counterfeit, Philip III, assayer M, ex-Atocha Research Collection (coin 216, "probably period counterfeit"). S-P18; KM-10; Cal-919. 10.95 grams. Like lot 144 above, this coin appears to be a contemporaneous counterfeit cast from a genuine coin, but in this case the metal is highly debased (XRF tested at 63.35% silver and 36.59% copper), visibly detectable with very coppery color and a thin flan but with full shield and cross showing correct details (assayer clear but not mentioned on tag or certificate), another very rare and important example of a circulating counterfeit from the early 1600s. Pedigreed to the Bill Barman Collection of Atocha RC Coins, with original Fisher tag and photo-certificate 85A-237081. Photocopy of original Atocha Research Collection catalog to be provided to winning bidder upon request. Recovered from: Atocha, sunk in 1622 west of Key West, Florida
