BOLIVIA, Potosí, cob 8 reales Royal (galano), 1715 Y, rare, NGC VF details / holed, ex-Ugaz. S-P43a; KM-R31; Cal-1487. 28.17 grams. Broad flan with full pillars-side details, off-center cross side with full crown and PHILIPPVS in legend, slightly doubled on both sides, contrastingly toned, with hole at top of pillars, only the cross side a match with Lázaro 259 (rated R2), the pillars-side die unrecorded. From 1712 to 1732 (see lot 1067 below), for reasons unknown, the 8R Royals show a word-separating ornament in the legends that looks like an upright spade-like symbol, which numismatists refer to as "condors"; in 1715-16, as seen here, the "condors" are also clustered around the denomination at the top of the pillars. Pedigreed to the Jorge Ugaz Collection.
