BOLIVIA, Potosí, cob 8 reales, Philip II, assayer R (Rincón), very rare, ex-Woodside. 26.37 grams. S-P1; KM-5.1; Cal-667. The long and eminently collectible Potosí 8R cob series has several rarities (even if you discount the Royal and Heart presentation pieces), but none so significant as the very first issue under assayer Rincón in 1575, populated by at most a few dozen examples struck from two different obverse dies differing in legend and style of lion in Brabant, one showing D,G, and a "dancing" or "Segovia-style" lion (Paoletti 47, Sellschopp 13), and the other with DEI,G, and a "flat" lion (Paoletti 48, Sellschopp 12). The present example of the former die shows a choice full crown and nearly full legends in addition to a well-detailed full shield and cross-lions-castles, with contrasting toning in crevices and very slightly oxidized surfaces, overall VF or better and worthy of the most advanced Potosí cob collection. Pedigreed to the Rob Woodside Collection and Sedwick Auction 33 (lot 687).
