BOLIVIA, Potosí, cob 8 reales, Philip II, assayer B (5th period, early style), ex-Ponte. S-P14; KM-unl (5.1 for type); Cal-672. 27.21 grams. Atypically large flan with nearly full legends, excellent full crown, shield, and cross, bold full P-B, XF with toning in most crevices. Note: This interesting early 5th-period style (Paoletti's Group B8) is most easily recognized by its unique X-shaped arrangement of five fleurs in New Burgundy, and its neater style apparently predates the very last coins of Philip II (most notably the "border of x's" variety) and the first issues attributable to Philip III with his ordinal visible, with which it shares some punches. Pedigreed to the Luis R. Ponte Collection.
