BOLIVIA, Potosí, cob 8 reales, Philip II, assayer B (1st period), HISPANIARVM with H, rare, ex-Seaby, ex-Woodside. S-P4; KM-5.1; Cal-672. 27.42 grams. Superbly detailed XF with contrasting toning, perfect interiors, and nearly full legends, with no flatness and only a trace of doubling in the obverse periphery, in fact one of the best examples we have ever seen for 1st-period B, which typically comes poorly struck. By our records compiled over several decades, these 8R were struck from several different obverse dies, some with and some without the initial letter H in HISPANIARVM, and several different reverse dies, including a unique one with "heavy" lions in the cross, per Sellschopp 155. The present coin is the only example we can trace with the same obverse as Sellschopp 155 (most easily differentiated by a specific arrangement of seven fleurs in New Burgundy) but different reverse with normal "dancing" lions. With old, original Seaby (London) envelope, pedigreed to the Rob Woodside Collection.
