BOLIVIA, Potosí, cob 8 reales Heart, 1709 Y, NGC XF details / environmental damage, finest and only example in NGC census, ex-von Schuckmann. S-P43a; KM-unl; Cal-1525. 28.09 grams. As a type, the rarest and most highly sought pieces in Potosí cobs are Hearts, intentionally shaped at the mint and struck with Royal dies, presumably to be worn or otherwise displayed in a religious setting, as the flaming Sacred Heart of Jesus Christ was (and is) an important symbol in the Catholic Church. The first Hearts were struck in the late 1680s, then issued sporadically until the 1750s. The most desirable Hearts are the 8 reales, of which our records indicate only 41 examples exist across 17 dates, this being only the fifth we have offered, a die-match with Lázaro 324 (rated RU for unique, but not the same coin as this one, itself a die-match with the Royal issue per Lázaro 250), but with its "tail" pointing right instead of left relative to the pillars side, all deeply toned and boldly struck with just a few spots of surface oxidation, minimal doubling and no flatness, and (best of all) medal-aligned with its scalloped-edge stem, holed as usual, to make for a perfect pendant, as no doubt it was in its time. Pedigreed to the Siegfried von Schuckmann Collection (Renaissance auction of December 2000, lot 678).
