BOLIVIA, Potosí, cob 8 reales, 1760 q, cut down for circulation in North Africa (Barbary), ex-Mastalir. S-P54; KM-40; Cal-538. 16.43 grams. In circulation along the Barbary coast of North Africa there was a 15- to 16-gram silver coin known as a "30 para," minted in Tripoli in 1773, that could have been linked to cut-down cobs like this one. Bust 8R cut down to this weight are also known. This VF example is clipped to a roughly pentagonal shape with partial pillars though clearly dated and with bold assayer plus partial king's name near cross. Pedigreed to the Roberto Mastalir Collection.
