BOLIVIA, Potosí, cob 8 reales, 1651 E, with crowned-script-L countermark (extremely rare) on cross, ex-Ponte, Mastalir Plate. S-P36; KM-19b; Cal-1491. 25.97 grams. Broad flan with metal extending past outer borders in places (with small part of edge bent), toned VF with a few marks but minimal surface corrosion (probably from the Capitana shipwreck of 1654), full PHILIPPVS IIII, very bold 16 and 1 of date, nearly full countermark filling top-right quadrant of full cross (clearly a script-L and not regular L as mis-attributed in Mastalir). Pedigreed to the Luis R. Ponte Collection, Plate Coin on page 198 of Mastalir's The Great Transition at the Potosí Mint 1649-1652: The 1649-1652 Crowned Shield Coinage and the Countermarks of 1652, Part A: The 1649-1652 Crowned Shield Coinage (2021) and on page 141 of Part B: The Countermarks of 1652.
