BOLIVIA, Potosí, cob 8 reales, 1651 E, with crowned-O and crowned-P countermarks on cross (very rare with two countermarks), ex-Ponte, ex-Hudson, Mastalir Plate. S-P36; KM-19b; Cal-1491. 7.94 grams. Extremely thin and underweight from corrosion but with both countermarks clear on nearly full cross, the shield quite worn but also full with clear assayer to left, edge-split, toned in crevices. Pedigreed to the Luis R. Ponte Collection and the Louis Hudson Collection (Sedwick Auction 6, lot 338), also plated on page 203 of Mastalir's book The Great Transition at the Potosí Mint, 1649-1652: The 1649-1652 Crowned Shield Coinage and the Countermarks of 1652, Part B: The Countermarks of 1652 (2020).
