BOLIVIA, Potosí, cob 8 reales, 1651 E, with crowned-L and crowned-T (small crown) countermarks on cross (very rare), ex-Ponte, ex-Ponterio, Mastalir Plate. S-P36; KM-19b; Cal-1491. 26.55 grams. Both countermarks choice and nearly full on slightly doubled full cross with bold 16 and partial 51 of date, full but weaker (and also doubled) shield with clear P-E and 8-E, lightly toned, edge-split. Pedigreed to the Luis R. Ponte Collection and the Ponterio "La Capitana" auction of April 1999 (lot 59), also plated on page 206 of Mastalir's book The Great Transition at the Potosí Mint, 1649-1652: The 1649-1652 Crowned Shield Coinage and the Countermarks of 1652, Part A: The Crowned Shield Coinage of 1649-1652, and on page 225 in Part B: The Countermarks of 1652 (2020).
