BOLIVIA, Potosí, cob 8 reales, 1651 E, with crowned-•F• (four dots) countermark on shield, with brockage of countermark on reverse, ex-Ponte, Mastalir Plate. S-P36; KM-19b; Cal-1491. 23.34 grams. Choice example with 100% complete date outside of weakly struck cross that shows a trace (brockage) of the countermark from the other side, great full crown and shield with nearly full countermark near center (next to an edge-split), lightly toned in crevices, no visible corrosion but somewhat underweight. Pedigreed to the Luis R. Ponte Collection and plated on page 201 of Mastalir's book The Great Transition at the Potosí Mint, 1649-1652: The 1649-1652 Crowned Shield Coinage and the Countermarks of 1652, Part A: The Crowned Shield Coinage of 1649-1652, and on page 352 in Part B: The Countermarks of 1652 (2020).
