BOLIVIA, Potosí, cob 8 reales, 1650 (modern 5, with dots) O, with pentagonal crowned-1605 countermark on cross, extremely rare, ex-Ponte, ex-Ullian, Mastalir Plate. S-P35; KM-unl (19b for type); Cal-unl (Type 327). 26.30 grams. Finest known example of this extremely rare countermark with all details clear including 1605, placed in center of full cross with clear but doubled date, well-detailed full crown and shield with P-O to left and 8•O• to right, full king's name and ordinal in legend, minimal corrosion, contrastingly toned. Pedigreed to the Luis R. Ponte Collection and the Louis Ullian Collection, also plated on page 189 of Mastalir's book The Great Transition at the Potosí Mint, 1649-1652: The 1649-1652 Crowned Shield Coinage and the Countermarks of 1652, Part A: The Crowned Shield Coinage of 1649-1652, and on page 389 of Part B: The Countermarks of 1652 (2020). Recovered from: Capitana, sunk in 1654 off Chanduy, Ecuador
