BOLIVIA, Potosí, cob 8 reales, 1650 (modern 5) O, with crowned-script-P and crowned-T countermarks on cross (very rare with two countermarks), ex-Capitana, ex-Hudson, ex-Ponte, Mastalir Plate. S-P35; KM-19b; Cal-1488. 25.46 grams. Weakly struck and lightly corroded but recognizable fine style that Mastalir points out was from special dies most likely intended for making Royals (galanos), with only bottom part of date at 11 to 1 o'clock visible but known to have modern 5 and dots between digits, below which is a bold and nearly full countermark at the top of the cross, in the center of which is a complete second countermark, lightly toned About Fine overall. From the Capitana (1654), pedigreed to the Ponterio "Capitana" auction of April 1999 (lot 53), the Louis Hudson Collection (Sedwick Auction 6, lot 314), and the Luis R. Ponte Collection, Plate Coin on page 109 of Mastalir's The Great Transition at the Potosí Mint 1649-1652: The 1649-1652 Crowned Shield Coinage and the Countermarks of 1652, Part A: The 1649-1652 Crowned Shield Coinage (2021) and on page 225 of Part B: The Countermarks of 1652.
