BOLIVIA, Potosí, cob 8 reales, 1650 (Spanish 5) O, with crowned-backwards-L countermark (very rare) on cross, ex-Capitana, ex-Ponte, Mastalir Plate. S-P35; KM-19b; Cal-1488. 27.10 grams. Interesting muling of old reverse with new-style obverse, bold date outside of full cross showing bold full countermark at bottom left, bold •8•O• to right of well-detailed shield, nicely toned and corrosion-free VF with deep hairline edge-crack, a choice broad-flan piece that Mastalir lauds as "by far the best example of this subtype and countermark.". From the Capitana (1654), pedigreed to the Ponterio auction of April 2000 (lot 1002) and the Luis R. Ponte Collection, Plate Coin on page 168 of Mastalir's The Great Transition at the Potosí Mint 1649-1652: The 1649-1652 Crowned Shield Coinage and the Countermarks of 1652, Part B: The Countermarks of 1652.
