BOLIVIA, Potosí, cob 8 reales, 1650 (Spanish 5) O, with crowned-S countermark on cross, ex-Capitana, ex-Ponte, Mastalir Plate. S-P35; KM-19b; Cal-1488. 28.12 grams. Spectacular example with full and bold details on both sides, no corrosion (overweight, in fact), with particularly full and bold date and countermark (scarce) on upper half of cross, AXF with lovely contrast from toning. Note: Mastalir singles out this coin for several interesting aspects, namely the king's name with correction to I instead of E (PHILIPVS), a clockwise-rotated 6 in the date, and a "flat head" lion with circular tail. From the Capitana (1654), pedigreed to Sedwick Auction 12 (lot 483) and the Luis R. Ponte Collection, Plate Coin on page 77 of Mastalir's The Great Transition at the Potosí Mint 1649-1652: The 1649-1652 Crowned Shield Coinage and the Countermarks of 1652, Part A: The 1649-1652 Crowned Shield Coinage (2021) and on page 211 of Part B: The Countermarks of 1652.
