BOLIVIA, Potosí, cob 8 reales, 1650 O, with crowned-L countermark on cross, ex-Ponte, Mastalir Plate. S-P35; KM-19b; Cal-1488. 19.72 grams. Thin from corrosion and with dark patches all over but with nice full shield and cross, the latter with bold 50 of date above and full countermark on upper half, clear assayer to left and denomination to right of shield with full king's ordinal IIII in legend. Pedigreed to the Luis R. Ponte Collection and plated on page 178 of Mastalir's book The Great Transition at the Potosí Mint, 1649-1652: The 1649-1652 Crowned Shield Coinage and the Countermarks of 1652, Part A: The Crowned Shield Coinage of 1649-1652, and on page 138 of Part B: The Countermarks of 1652 (2020). Recovered from: Capitana, sunk in 1654 off Chanduy, Ecuador
