BOLIVIA, Potosí, cob 8 reales, 1650 O, date at 5 o'clock (unique), with crowned-script-L countermark on cross (extremely rare), ex-Capitana, ex-Hudson, ex-Ponte, Mastalir Plate. S-P35; KM-19b; Cal-1488 var. 26.51 grams. Weakly struck host but choice AU countermark (with luster), almost fully rendered to right of full cross (new style), of which Mastalir says only four are known, with clear date in 180-degree rotated legend, good full shield with clear P-O to left and 8-O to right, overall low-contrast About Fine with lightly pitted surfaces and parts of edge crude. Note: This appears to be a unique mule with old-style shield and new-style cross with Spanish 5, not to mention the rotated legend, which Mastalir did not mention or describe. From the Capitana (1654), pedigreed to the Louis Hudson Collection (Sedwick Auction 6, lot 312) and the Luis R. Ponte Collection, Plate Coin on page 178 of Mastalir's The Great Transition at the Potosí Mint 1649-1652: The 1649-1652 Crowned Shield Coinage and the Countermarks of 1652, Part A: The 1649-1652 Crowned Shield Coinage (2021) and on page 172 of Part B: The Countermarks of 1652.
