BOLIVIA, Potosí, cob 8 reales, (1649) O, with crown-alone countermark on shield, ex-Ponte, ex-Hudson, Mastalir Plate. S-P35; KM-19b; Cal-1487. 24.54 grams. Broad flan with bold full P•O to left of weak shield with very bold countermark at upper right (also nearly full crown above), weak cross with full tressure and clear tail of 9 of date, lightly corroded, edge-split. Pedigreed to the Luis R. Ponte Collection and the Louis Hudson Collection (Sedwick Auction 6, lot 302), also plated on page 276 of Mastalir's book The Great Transition at the Potosí Mint, 1649-1652: The 1649-1652 Crowned Shield Coinage and the Countermarks of 1652, Part B: The Countermarks of 1652 (2020).
