BOLIVIA, Potosí, cob 8 reales, 1649 O, retrograde 4 in date (very rare), with Guatemala sun-over-mountains (Type II, 1839) countermark on cross, ex-Ponte, Mastalir Plate. S-P35; KM-19b; Cal-1487 var. 24.64 grams. Broad-flan VG with edge-split and much flatness but full shield and cross nonetheless, light rich toning all over, full 49 of date with retrograde 4, bold XF countermark in bottom-right quadrant, full P-O to left and clear 8 to right, holed at top of shield, an interesting coin that probably left South America before 1652 (hence without countermark) and circulated in Guatemala well into the 1800s. Pedigreed to the Luis R. Ponte Collection, Plate Coin on page 416 of Mastalir's The Great Transition at the Potosí Mint 1649-1652: The 1649-1652 Crowned Shield Coinage and the Countermarks of 1652, Part B: The Countermarks of 1652.
