BOLIVIA, Potosí, cob 8 reales, 1641 TR, quadrants of cross transposed, Portuguese inescutcheon for Flanders-Tirol, very rare, ex-Ponte. S-P27; KM-19a; Cal-unl (Type 327). 26.43 grams. Full 41 and most of 6 of date outside of full cross, certain P-TR to left of good full shield with Flanders-Tirol in bottom half replaced by the shield of Portugal (weak but certain), toned AVF. According to Bolivian researcher Daniel Oropeza Alba, this strange issue (more prominent on the Royals for this year) is linked to a Portuguese neighborhood within Potosí known as the "Lusitanos" that suffered persecution and dispossession of property as a result of the Portuguese revolution of 1640, which ended Spanish control and restored the Portuguese throne under the Duke of Braganza (João IV). Pedigreed to the Luis R. Ponte Collection.
