BOLIVIA, Potosí, cob 8 reales, 1617 M, NGC XF 40, ex-Eidel, ex-Sellschopp (Plate), Grunthal-Sellschopp Plate, Guttag Plate, Yriarte Plate. S-P19; KM-10; Cal-921. 27.14 grams. With the boldest and fullest 617 date imaginable, clearly hand-engraved on a die whose legend and border were erased at 10-11 o'clock specifically to make room for the newly mandated date (prefaced by a clear ANO DE in the new legend), it is easy to see why this coin has such an illustrious pedigree, despite some doubling in the bold full cross and shield, with clear P-M lacking middle dot to left, judiciously toned all over. It is worth noting that this first Potosí date was once rare, until the Atocha "Mother Lode" of 1985 yielded scores of fresh examples. Pedigreed to the Sellschopp Collection (stated on label, Swiss Bank Corp. auction of September 1988, lot 616) and to the Charles Eidel Collection (Sedwick auction of November 2016, lot 760); Plate Coin 415 in Grunthal-Sellschopp's The Coinage of Peru (1978); and Plate Coin 379 in Sellschopp's Las acuñaciones de las cecas de Lima, La Plata y Potosí (1971).
