BOLIVIA, Potosí, cob 4 reales Royal (galano), 1678 E, struck over a Potosí shield-type cob 8 reales, unique, ex-Ortiz. S-P37b; KM-R25; Cal-502. 12.18 grams. Broad-flan XF with plugged hole at bottom of pillars and minor surface porosity (possibly from removal of gilding), toned in crevices, with some legend (three dates) and clear inner details that at first look doubled but upon closer inspection are actually struck over a Potosí shield type cob 8 reales in half thickness, the host's shield detail and denomination peeking through on the cross side with some elements of the host coin's cross among the pillars, a crazy piece unlike any we have seen before. Pedigreed to the Emilio Ortiz Collection and to the Swiss Bank Corporation sale of January 1991 (lot 108), and to the Ponterio auction of March 1992 (lot 794).
