BOLIVIA, Potosí, cob 4 reales, Philip II, assayer R (Rincón) to right, rare, ex-Ponte, ex-Sellschopp (Plate), Grunthal-Sellschopp Plate. S-P1; KM-4.2; Cal-519. 13.52 grams. Very broad flan with full crown and legends, choice full inner details (upper part of cross slightly doubled), XF with lovely old toning all over. The significance of the somewhat rarer P-R right instead of left is unknown, and while it is tempting to speculate, there appears to be no provable connection to La Plata vs. Potosí in the higher denominations, despite the fact that the move from left to right seems to have played such a role in 1R (see Stallard and Sedwick article in Sedwick Auction 30). Pedigreed to the Luis R. Ponte Collection and the Sellschopp Collection (Swiss Bank Corp. auction of September 1988, lot 32), Plate Coin 15 in Sellschopp's Las acuñaciones de las cecas de Lima, La Plata y Potosí (1971), and Plate Coin 18 on page 53 of Grunthal-Sellschopp's The Coinage of Peru (1978).
