BOLIVIA, Potosí, cob 4 reales, 1652 E, transitional McLean Type II, rare, "La Capitana" auction Cover Coin, Mastalir Plate. S-P37; KM-B18; Cal-1111. 12.79 grams. Not only the choicest example known, beautifully toned with bold date outside of 100% full (but slightly off-center) pillars-and-waves, and with superb full cross-castles-lions below crown and pomegranate showing P to left and E to right and part of second date below, no corrosion but small part of edge slightly crude (as made), but also iconic and highly desirable as plated in color on the cover of the original premier auction of coins from this wreck in 1999 by Ponterio and Associates, a one-of-a-kind and incomparable gem for the shipwreck enthusiast and high-end cob collector alike. Pedigreed to the original "La Capitana" auction (Ponterio auction of April 1999, lot 246), plated on the catalog cover, with original catalog, also plated on page 46 of Mastalir's 2016 book The Great Transition at the Potosí Mint 1649-1652, The 1652 Transitional Minor Denominations 4, 2, 1 and 1/2 Reales. Recovered from: Capitana, sunk in 1654 off Chanduy, Ecuador
