BOLIVIA, Potosí, cob 4 reales, 1652 E, transitional McLean Type I, variety with E in center above waves, retrograde 4 to left of shield, ex-Ponte, ex-Capitana (1654), Mastalir Plate, Janson Plate. S-P37; KM-A18 var; Cal-1109 var; Janson-19.1.4. 13.30 grams. Choice full interior details (the bold pillars curiously leaning left, with E-E-E above waves) on a broad flan with much legend including full date 1652, XF with dark surface oxidation (nice contrast), overall much better struck than usual with minimal flatness and doubling, also interesting as lacking a pomegranate at the bottom of the shield. Pedigreed to the Luis R. Ponte Collection and to the Capitana (1654), Plate Coin on page 40 of Mastalir's The Great Transition at the Potosí Mint 1649-1653: The 1652 Transitional Minor Denominations, 4, 2, 1 and 1/2 Reales (2016), and Plate Coin on page 71 of Carlos Janson's La Moneda Circulante en el Territorio Argentino (2020).
