BOLIVIA, Potosí, cob 4 reales, 1651 (modern 5) E, with crowned-PH countermark on shield, ex-Ponte, Mastalir Plate. S-P36; KM-17b; Cal-1108. 10.14 grams. Bold left half of countermark near center of well-detailed full shield with clear 4-E and king's name to right, full but weaker cross-and-tressure, toned in crevices, thin from corrosion. Pedigreed to the Luis R. Ponte Collection and plated on page 366 of Mastalir's book The Great Transition at the Potosí Mint, 1649-1652: The 1649-1652 Crowned Shield Coinage and the Countermarks of 1652, Part B: The Countermarks of 1652 (2020), also pedigreed to Sedwick Auction 15 (lot 491). Recovered from: Capitana, sunk in 1654 off Chanduy, Ecuador
