BOLIVIA, Potosí, cob 4 reales, 1651 (modern 5) E, with crowned-C and crown-alone countermarks on shield (very rare with two countermarks), ex-Ponte, Mastalir Plate. S-P36; KM-17b; Cal-1108. 12.85 grams. Both countermarks full and overlapping toward the right side of a full shield with clear E to either side, bold modern 5 of date outside of weak full cross, unevenly rainbow-toned VG with minor edge-splits. Pedigreed to the Luis R. Ponte Collection and Sedwick Auction 16 (lot 567), plated on page 149 of Mastalir's book The Great Transition at the Potosí Mint, 1649-1652: The 1649-1652 Crowned Shield Coinage and the Countermarks of 1652, Part A: The Crowned Shield Coinage of 1649-1652, and on pages 72 and 274 of Part B: The Countermarks of 1652 (2021).
