BOLIVIA, Potosí, cob 4 reales, 1651 (modern 5) E, with crown-alone (rare variety) and crowned-arms countermarks on cross (very rare with two countermarks), ex-Ponte, Mastalir Plate. S-P36; KM-17b; Cal-1108. 11.55 grams. Thin flan (practically no corrosion) with edge-split next to weak but nearly full crown countermark on right arm of full cross, partial date, bold but typically incomplete arms countermark at edge with brockage of same on other side to right of full but weaker and slightly off-center shield, bold denomination 4, very lightly toned. Pedigreed to the Luis R. Ponte Collection and plated on pages 61 and 311 of Mastalir's book The Great Transition at the Potosí Mint, 1649-1652: The 1649-1652 Crowned Shield Coinage and the Countermarks of 1652, Part B: The Countermarks of 1652 (2020), also pedigreed to Sedwick Auction 20 (lot 420).
