BOLIVIA, Potosí, cob 4 reales, (1651-52) E, with crowned-retrograde L countermark (rare) on cross, ex-Ponte, ex-Hudson, ex-Ponterio, Mastalir Plate. S-P36; KM-17b; Cal-Type 279. 11.80 grams. Bold full cross with choice full countermark at bottom left, well-detailed full shield, lightly corroded but still rather nice overall, toned in crevices. Pedigreed to the Luis R. Ponte Collection and the Louis Hudson Collection (Sedwick Auction 6, lot 358), also pedigreed to the Ponterio "La Capitana" auction (April 1999, lot 36), and plated on page 170 of Mastalir's book The Great Transition at the Potosí Mint, 1649-1652: The 1649-1652 Crowned Shield Coinage and the Countermarks of 1652, Part B: The Countermarks of 1652 (2020). Recovered from: Capitana, sunk in 1654 off Chanduy, Ecuador
