BOLIVIA, Potosí, cob 4 reales, (1651-52) E, with crowned-O countermark on cross, ex-Ponte, Mastalir Plate. S-P36; KM-17b; Cal-Type 279. 13.54 grams. Very choice full and bold countermark to left of full cross, nearly full shield with clear 4-E to left inside bold king's name, peripherally flat and marked but virtually uncorroded, contrastingly toned, possible 2 of date (but more likely just stray metal in a flat area), which would be extremely rare. Pedigreed to the Luis R. Ponte Collection and plated on page 187 of Mastalir's book The Great Transition at the Potosí Mint, 1649-1652: The 1649-1652 Crowned Shield Coinage and the Countermarks of 1652, Part B: The Countermarks of 1652 (2020), also pedigreed to Sedwick Auction 15 (lot 491). Recovered from: Capitana, sunk in 1654 off Chanduy, Ecuador
