BOLIVIA, Potosí, cob 4 reales, (1651-52) E, with crowned-O and crowned-arms countermarks on cross (very rare with two countermarks), ex-Ponte, ex-Hudson, Mastalir Plate. S-P36; KM-17b; Cal-Type 279. 11.77 grams. Slightly off-center strike on a broad flan with nice full shield showing clear 4-E to right, full cross with full O countermark in bottom-right quadrant and very bold partial arms countermark on edge, toned in crevices, light corrosion only. Pedigreed to the Luis R. Ponte Collection and the Louis Hudson Collection (Sedwick Auction 6, lot 359), also plated on pages 65 and 187 of Mastalir's book The Great Transition at the Potosí Mint, 1649-1652: The 1649-1652 Crowned Shield Coinage and the Countermarks of 1652, Part B: The Countermarks of 1652 (2020).
