BOLIVIA, Potosí, cob 4 reales, (1651-52) E, with crowned-•F• (two dots) countermark on shield and crowned-L countermark on cross (very rare with two countermarks), ex-Ponte, ex-Meylach, Mastalir Plate. Nicely round but somewhat thin flan with well-detailed full shield showing bold (P)-E to left and 4-(E) to right, nearly full F countermark at top, the full cross a bit messy from doubling and corrosion but with full L countermark at top right, lightly toned with a few dark patches. Pedigreed to the Luis R. Ponte Collection and the Marty Meylach Collection (Sedwick Auction 10, lot 387), also plated on pages 145 and 347 of Mastalir's book The Great Transition at the Potosí Mint, 1649-1652: The 1649-1652 Crowned Shield Coinage and the Countermarks of 1652, Part B: The Countermarks of 1652 (2020).
