BOLIVIA, Potosí, cob 4 reales, (1651-52) (E), with crown-alone (rare variety) and arms countermarks on cross (very rare with two countermarks), ex-Ponte, Mastalir Plate. S-P36; KM-17b; Cal-Type 279. 12.98 grams. Solid and uncorroded but with much flatness in peripheries where a more-complete-than-usual arms countermark has caused a split and slight bend, the other countermark at top right of choice but off-center cross, nice upper half of shield on other side, toned in crevices. Pedigreed to the Luis R. Ponte Collection and plated on pages 65 and 303 of Mastalir's book The Great Transition at the Potosí Mint, 1649-1652: The 1649-1652 Crowned Shield Coinage and the Countermarks of 1652, Part B: The Countermarks of 1652 (2020), also pedigreed to Sedwick Auction 15 (lot 491). Recovered from: Maravillas, sunk in 1656 off Grand Bahama Island
