BOLIVIA, Potosí, cob 4 reales, (1650) O, with pentagonal crowned-1652 countermark (unique) on cross, ex-Ponte, Mastalir Plate. S-P35; KM-17b; Cal-1106. 13.31 grams. Bold and nearly full countermark (in fact, the ONLY example of this countermark known on a 4R!) at bottom left of full cross, full shield with bold O to left and clear 4-O to right, weakly struck with flat areas but no visible corrosion, toned in crevices, nice round flan. Pedigreed to the Luis R. Ponte Collection and Sedwick Auction 17 (lot 388), also plated on page 388 of Mastalir's book The Great Transition at the Potosí Mint, 1649-1652: The 1649-1652 Crowned Shield Coinage and the Countermarks of 1652, Part B: The Countermarks of 1652 (2020).
